Schon der Opener wurde zum Publikumsfavoriten: Muddy What? erspielten sich am Freitag mit ihrem New Blues den lautesten und längsten Applaus. Zunächst begeisterten Virtuosität und Präzision von Ina Spang an der E-Gitarre, die sie etwa bei der Eigenkomposition "Spider Legs" an den Tag legte; dazu kam die helle und mit natürlichem Vibrato ausgestattete Stimme des Rhythmus-Gitarristen Fabian Spang. Die jugendlich wirkende Band spielt bereits seit 2006 zusammen. Den zweiten Set bestritten Muddy What? unplugged: Drummer Michi Lang griff zum Bass, Fabian Spang zur akustischen Gitarre und Ina Spang zur Mandoline, mit der sie ein hinreißendes Solo zum Song "Haven’t Seen You for a While" ablieferte.

Talent trifft erdige Natürlichkeit: Muddy What? begeistert sein Publikum und demonstriert endlos scheinende Liebe zum Blues. Das Trio ist für Kenner des Blus keine Unbekannte, für alle anderen dafür Grund genug, diese Art der Musik zu lieben. Zwei Männer, eine Frau – was macht das Trio so besonders? Vieles. Es sorgt beim Publikum für Staunen, weil man die Mitglieder angesichts ihres Alters mit diesem Musikgenre nicht in Verbindung bringt. Nahezu jeder Song wird von Fabians entfesseltem Gesang getragen, er beschreibt Gefühlswelten mit seiner markanten und energetischen Stimme und zeigt sich parallel dazu als versierter Gitarrist. Allerdings legt seine Schwester Ina, was das Tempo betrifft, noch einen drauf, wenn sie die Saiten ihrer Mandoline zum Klingen bringt. Was für eine begnadete Musikerin! Ein zierlicher Hingucker mit authentischer Löwenmähne. Last but noch least: Taktgeber Michi Lang, dessen etwa sechs Minuten dauerndes Schlagzeugsolo sein außergewöhnliches Talent unter Beweis stellt.

Was die drei da dem Publikum auftischten, was satter, erdiger Blues vom Feinsten. Nah an den traditionellen Wurzeln, die jeder Song zu haben schien, aber ebenso frisch und lebendig im Hier und Jetzt. Muddy What? hat sich zu einem eigenständigen Vertreter des sogenannten New Blues entwickelt. Die Anerkennung aus Fachkreisen ist hoch, was neben anderem auch der Gewinn der Germann Blues Challenge 2021 zeigt. Die Spang-Geschwister und Michi Lang brennen für ihren New-Blues mit Herzblut und Leidenschaft, das hört man sehr schnell. Ihre Musiker-Herzen schlagen klar im selben Takt und mit ebenso großer Intensität. Wie tief diese Musik in ihnen steckt, zeigten vor allem die vielen eigenen Stücke.

First of all, the virtuosity and precision of Ina Spang on the electric guitar, which she used for example on the original composition "Spider Legs", was inspiring; in addition, there was the clear voice of rhythm guitarist Fabian Spang, with its natural vibrato. The youthful band has been playing together since 2006. Muddy What? played the second set unplugged: drummer Michi Lang picked up the bass, Fabian Spang the acoustic guitar and Ina Spang the mandolin, with which she delivered a stunning solo in the song "Haven't Seen You for a While".

Talent meets down-to-earth authenticity: Muddy What? inspires its audience and demonstrates a seemingly endless love for the blues. The trio is no stranger to connoisseurs of the blues, but for everyone else reason enough to love this kind of music. Two men, one woman - what makes this trio so special? Many things. It causes astonishment in the audience, because one does not associate the members with this music genre given their age. Almost every song is carried by Fabian's unleashed vocals, he describes emotional worlds with his distinctive and energetic voice and shows himself to be an accomplished guitarist at the same time. However, his sister Ina, as far as the tempo is concerned, takes it up a notch when she makes the strings of her mandolin sing. What a gifted musician! A graceful eye-catcher with an authentic lion's mane. Last but not least: rhythm master Michi Lang, whose drum solo lasting about six minutes proves his extraordinary talent.

What the three served up to the audience was rich, earthy blues at its best. Close to the traditional roots that each song seemed to have, but just as fresh and alive in the present. Muddy What? has become an outstanding representative of the so-called New Blues. Recognition from professional circles is high, as demonstrated by, among other things, winning the Germann Blues Challenge 2021. The Spang siblings and Michi Lang are burning for their New Blues with heart blood and passion, you can hear that very quickly. Their musical hearts clearly beat in sync and with just as much intensity. How deep this music is in them, was shown especially by the many original compositions.
